Pench National Park

Pench Tiger Reserve is another good tiger habitat in the Central India or State of Madhya Pradesh. This is a good place to see the Indian Wolf on the outskirts. It is named after the Pench River that flows through the park and is dammed at Totlah Doh. The Seoni Hills are the forest best described in the "Jungle Book" by Rudyard Kipling. Part of the 700 pus area lies in the neighboring State of Maharastra.

Among the mega fauna seen here are tiger, leopard, wolf, wild dog, hyena, nilgai, sloth bear, spotted deer, jackal, langur, wild boar, bison, barking deer and many nocturnal mammals and birds. The reserve is one of the finest birding destinations in India for forest species. A large number of wetland birds can be sighted at Totlah Doh Dam and the Pench River. The jungles of Pench are dry deciduous type with mixed forests and bamboo.

The prey base is excellent for big cats which survive in good numbers. The terrain is plains with small grasslands and dense forests. The hilly regions are excellent breeding grounds for all life forms. Tiger sightings are high thanks to excellent conservation measures. Leopard sightings are frequent but require some luck. Bisons thrive the best here and Pench is the best place to see these coarse grazers. Tiger safari is exciting with sightings of large number of deer and tiger. trekking is not allowed in the preserve hence jeep safari and elephant rides are the only option for wild adventures.

Nearest airport and railway station is in Nagpur city(80 km.). Jabalpur is about 200 km. away from Pench (Turai gate) and Kanha national park (Kisli gate) is about 250 km. Chindwara is about 65 km. but via Seoni is 120 km.
