Kanha National Park

The Kanha forests at Banjar and Halon River were accorded sanctuary status during the British Rule as respective PAs. The park is a major conservation center for Project Tiger and other wild animals. The area of 940 constitutes the core while 1005 is the buffer zone. The major success has arisen from conservation of Swamp Deer as only few head were left during the sixties. Today about 300 plus animals survive. The tigers number around 100 including cubs and breed successfully with high rate of survival.

Bison or Gaur as another major attraction besides hard ground barasingha, leopard, wild dog, sloth bear, jackal, nilgai, sambar, spotted deer, barking deer and wild boar. There are many small nocturnal mammals which are usually seen at night in the outskirts. Kanha Tiger Reserve is the finest tiger habitat which can be seen on jeep safari in the tourism zone of the preserve. Reptiles except the python are rarely seen. The forest birds are in plentiful and Kanha is an exciting birding destination is India. There are more than 260 species of avians including winter migrants.

The tourism takes place through Mukki, Sarhi and Khatia gate for respective zones. The Kanha Zone is the premium zone and greater gate fee has to be paid. It is advisable to book your tiger safari in advance.

Best time to visit

Kanha National Park is open for visitors from 16-Oct. till 30-June. From 01/April/2011, it will remain closed for safari on every Wednesday.
